A recent report indicates that 737 Google Chrome extensions have been identified as surreptitiously routing user browser traffic through proxy servers. These extensions, which collectively amassed over 75,000 installations, were primarily observed targeting Russian-speaking users. The core functionality of these extensions appears to be the circumvention of geo-restrictions or service blocks, while simultaneously introducing a significant security risk through the proxying of user data.
The mechanism behind this operation involves the extensions modifying browser network settings to redirect traffic through attacker-controlled or compromised proxy servers. This allows users to access services that might otherwise be unavailable in their region, fulfilling the stated or implied purpose of many such bypass tools. However, the inherent danger lies in the nature of proxying, where all data passing through the proxy server can be intercepted, inspected, and potentially modified by the operator of that server. This exposes sensitive user information, including login credentials, browsing history, and personal data, to unauthorized access.
Many of the identified extensions also engaged in impersonation, mimicking legitimate services or popular tools to trick users into installing them. This social engineering tactic is common in the distribution of malicious software, leveraging the trust users place in established brands or widely used utilities. Once installed, the extensions would then proceed with their traffic redirection activities, often without any clear indication to the user that their network configuration had been altered.
The affected product in this instance is Google Chrome, specifically its extension ecosystem. Extensions, by design, are granted various permissions to interact with the browser and the web content.
