Google Is Suing Chinese Scammers Who Are Using Gemini

Google has initiated legal action against a group identified as Outsider Enterprise, a China-based operation accused of leveraging Google's Gemini AI to facilitate phishing scams. The lawsuit aims to curb the group's activities, which reportedly involve offering phishing-as-a-service through Telegram.
According to court documents, Outsider Enterprise provides individuals with the tools and instructions to create fraudulent websites and text message campaigns. These instructions allegedly include guidance on using Google's Gemini AI to mimic legitimate websites, such as those belonging to Google itself, YouTube, and government entities like New York's E-ZPass system. The group is reported to have offered approximately 300 different scam templates to its clients.
Google has been actively working to combat such malicious activities. The company has collaborated with major telecommunications providers, including AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile, to block a significant volume of scam-related text messages. Furthermore, Google's on-device scam detection feature within Google Messages is credited with helping to reduce the success rate of phishing attempts. This AI-powered feature is reported to intercept around 10 billion scam texts each month, suggesting it likely played a role in detecting and mitigating some of Outsider Enterprise's operations.
