A recent academic paper has analyzed entrepreneurial fraud cases in Silicon Valley from 2000 to 2023, identifying a systematic process dubbed "façading" used by founders to deceive investors and other audiences. The research, which examined court data from prosecuted fraud cases, describes façading as the construction, performance, and protection of illusory appearances that project high-growth performance while concealing actual underperformance.
The paper categorizes façading into three forms: surface, reinforced, and deep façading. These categories are determined by the severity of the discrepancy between audience expectations for performance and the venture's actual operational reality. As the gap between expectation and reality widens, entrepreneurs engage in increasingly sophisticated efforts to detach the external perception of their venture from its true state.
Surface façading occurs when entrepreneurs face minor gaps between expectations and reality. Reinforced façading is employed for wider gaps, involving more elaborate deceptive practices. Deep façading is utilized when there is an extreme expectation-reality gap, requiring the most sophisticated and extensive efforts to maintain the illusion of success.
The study proposes several practical approaches to deter and detect this criminal deception. These include expanding the surveillance and whistleblower programs of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, reforming investor due diligence processes, and implementing targeted entrepreneurship education interventions. These educational programs would aim to clearly define the boundary at which entrepreneurial actions cross into criminal deception.
The research contributes to existing literature in areas such as cultural entrepreneurship, organizational wrongdoing, and the broader social effects of entrepreneurship. The findings highlight a pattern of behavior in which founders actively manipulate perceptions to secure funding and maintain an image of success despite underlying operational failures.
