Google has initiated legal action against Outsider Enterprise, a China-based group accused of operating a "phishing-as-a-service" scheme that leverages Google's Gemini AI to generate fraudulent content. The lawsuit, filed by Google, alleges that Outsider Enterprise provides tools and instructions to individuals for creating sophisticated phishing websites and text message campaigns, even those without advanced technical skills.
According to Google's legal filing, Outsider Enterprise primarily operates through Telegram channels. These channels reportedly offered nearly 300 scam templates and detailed guidance on how to utilize Google's Gemini AI to develop websites that mimic legitimate entities. Among the targets for imitation were Google itself, YouTube, and government agencies, including New York's E-ZPass system.
Google claims that the group's services enabled malicious actors to craft convincing fraudulent digital presences. The company has taken steps to counter these activities, collaborating with major telecommunications providers such as AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile to block a significant volume of the associated malicious text messages.
Furthermore, Google highlighted the role of its on-device scam detection feature within Google Messages. This AI-powered capability is reported to intercept approximately 10 billion scam texts monthly, and Google suggests it likely played a part in mitigating the impact of Outsider Enterprise's phishing attempts. The company's legal action underscores an ongoing effort to combat the misuse of its AI technologies for cybercrime.
