ChatGPT, OpenAI's popular AI chatbot, is experiencing a significant global outage, preventing users from logging in, creating new accounts, or accessing existing conversations. The disruption began around 8 PM ET on Wednesday, August 19, impacting users across various regions, including the United States and Europe.
Users attempting to access ChatGPT are encountering persistent loading animations in the sidebar and receiving "too many concurrent requests" error messages when trying to send messages. New sign-ups and login attempts on chatgpt.com are also failing.
OpenAI has confirmed the issues, acknowledging them on its official status page. The company stated that it has identified login problems affecting multiple services and is actively working on implementing a mitigation strategy.
Beyond the core ChatGPT service, the outage also extends to OpenAI's coding platform, Codex. Furthermore, the OpenAI API is affected, with at least 12 API endpoints listed as experiencing issues on the company's status page.
Approximately 14 minutes after the incident began, OpenAI updated its status page to indicate that the problem had been identified and was still ongoing. Tests conducted by various users continue to show persistent access issues.
