Your Mac already has a built-in firewall. Here’s how to get more from it

Malwarebytes Firewall gives you a clearer, more intuitive way to manage your Mac's inbuilt firewall.

zeroday.news ·

macOS includes a built-in firewall designed to manage incoming network connections, providing a layer of security by determining which requests from applications and other devices are permitted or blocked. While the default settings are often sufficient for many users, adjusting them for specific scenarios, such as public Wi-Fi use or fine-tuning application access, can be complex due to the native system menus.

Malwarebytes Firewall is a new feature integrated into the Malwarebytes for Mac security suite, aiming to simplify the management of the macOS firewall. It provides a more intuitive interface and a set of controls that build upon the existing Apple functionality, rather than replacing it.

The new Malwarebytes feature offers four distinct settings to enhance user control. "Stealth Mode" is designed to increase privacy when connected to public networks, such as those found in hotels, coffee shops, or airports, by making the Mac less discoverable to other devices on the same network.

For the highest level of control, "Strict Mode" restricts incoming connections to only core services like web browsing and email. While this offers enhanced security, it may block functionalities such as AirDrop or screen sharing.

Two other settings streamline the approval process for trusted applications. "Trust Apple apps" automatically allows connections for built-in macOS applications, including FaceTime, Messages, and Notes, eliminating the need for individual approvals. Similarly, "Trust verified downloaded apps" grants automatic permission for incoming connections from applications that users have downloaded and explicitly chosen to trust, such as Zoom, Dropbox, or Outlook, bypassing manual authorization for each.

Users can dynamically switch between these settings based on their network environment. For instance, when on a home Wi-Fi network, enabling "Trust Apple apps" and "Trust verified downloaded apps" might be suitable. When using public Wi-Fi, activating "Stealth Mode" is recommended for added privacy, and "Strict Mode" can be engaged for even tighter control over incoming connections.

This new functionality is available to users who update to the latest version of Malwarebytes for Mac. It aims to provide a more accessible way to leverage the Mac's inherent firewall capabilities without navigating through intricate system configurations.

Critical Flaw in NASA/JPL Open-Source Spacecraft Command Software Allowed Unauthenticated Command Execution

A critical vulnerability has been discovered in NASA/JPL's open-source AIT-GUI software, which is used to control spacecraft instruments. The flaw allows unauthenticated attackers to execute arbitrary commands, run server-side scripts, and manipulate command sequences by exploiting a lack of authentication, session checks, and CSRF protection. Researchers confirmed the issue, which has a CVSS score of 9.4, and a fix is available in version 2.5.2.
