CVE-2026-73570critical

Attackers Exploit Zimbra SNMP Flaw for Unauthenticated Remote Code Execution

Attackers are actively exploiting a critical vulnerability in Zimbra Collaboration (ZCS) that allows for unauthenticated remote code execution. The flaw, identified as CVE-2026-73570 with a CVSS score of 8.9, stems from improper input sanitization in the SNMP notification processing. Exploitation can lead to the execution of arbitrary operating system commands as the Zimbra user. Zimbra has released version 10.1.20 to patch this vulnerability, and CERT Polska is urging users to check their logs for signs of compromise.

Attackers are reportedly exploiting a critical vulnerability in Zimbra Collaboration Suite (ZCS) that enables unauthenticated remote code execution. The flaw, tracked as CVE-2026-73570 and assigned a CVSS score of 8.9, is attributed to insufficient input sanitization within the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) notification processing component of ZCS.

The vulnerability allows an unauthenticated attacker to execute arbitrary operating system commands on the affected server. These commands are executed with the privileges of the Zimbra user, which typically has significant access within the ZCS environment. Such access could enable further compromise of the email and collaboration platform, potentially leading to data exfiltration, service disruption, or the establishment of persistent access.

The core mechanism of this exploit lies in the improper handling of data received via SNMP notifications. SNMP is a widely used protocol for monitoring and managing network devices. When an SNMP agent receives a notification, it processes the incoming data. If this processing does not adequately sanitize or validate user-supplied input, specially crafted data can be interpreted as executable commands by the underlying system, leading to remote code execution.

Zimbra has released an update, version 10.1.20, to address this critical vulnerability. Users of Zimbra Collaboration Suite are strongly advised to upgrade their installations to this patched version as soon as possible to mitigate the risk of exploitation. Given the active exploitation, immediate patching is crucial.

Beyond patching, organizations are urged to review their system logs for any indicators of compromise. CERT Polska has specifically recommended this action, highlighting the importance of forensic analysis to determine if systems have already been breached. Signs of compromise might include unusual process execution, unexpected network connections originating from the Zimbra server, or modifications to Zimbra configuration files.

This incident underscores the persistent threat posed by vulnerabilities in widely deployed enterprise software, particularly those that offer unauthenticated remote code execution. Such flaws are highly prized by attackers due to their potential for widespread impact and ease of exploitation. Regular patching, robust log monitoring, and adherence to security best practices remain essential defenses against these types of attacks.
