A sophisticated threat actor, identified as Storm-2945, a sub-cluster of the group known as Midnight Blizzard, has reportedly initiated a global campaign dubbed "CaptiveCrunch." This operation specifically targets travelers by exploiting captive portal networks to facilitate malware delivery and credential theft. The threat actor is said to manipulate network traffic to achieve these objectives, employing tactics that include the distribution of a Go-based Remote Access Trojan (RAT) named CornFlake.
The core mechanism of CaptiveCrunch involves the manipulation of network traffic within captive portal environments. These portals are commonly encountered in public Wi-Fi settings, such as airports, hotels, and cafes, requiring users to authenticate or agree to terms before gaining internet access. Storm-2945 is reported to be leveraging this initial access point to inject malicious content or redirect users to attacker-controlled resources. This allows for the delivery of malware, including the custom Go-based RAT, CornFlake, which would grant the attackers remote control over compromised systems.
Beyond malware delivery, the campaign also focuses on credential theft through sophisticated phishing attacks. The threat actor reportedly mimics legitimate system updates, leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the believability of these lures. Victims are tricked into believing they are installing genuine software updates, when in fact they are downloading malicious software or divulging sensitive information. By stealing legitimate user credentials, Storm-2945 can enroll attacker-controlled or compromised devices into an organization's Entra ID tenant. This action can grant persistent access to cloud resources, bypass multi-factor authentication (MFA) policies in certain configurations, and enable further lateral movement within an affected organization's cloud environment.
Mitigation for this class of attack typically involves several layers of defense. For travelers, exercising extreme caution when connecting to public Wi-Fi networks is paramount. Using a reputable Virtual Private Network (VPN) can encrypt traffic and prevent network manipulation attempts. Users should also be highly suspicious of unsolicited system update prompts, especially when connected to public networks, and should only download software updates directly from official vendor websites.
Organizations should implement robust identity and access management practices, including strong MFA for all users, particularly those with administrative privileges. Conditional Access policies in Microsoft Entra ID can restrict device registration to trusted or compliant devices and locations. Continuous monitoring for unusual device registrations and suspicious login activities is also crucial for detecting and responding to such threats.
