Nichirei Corporation, a major Japanese food company, confirmed that a cyberattack on its servers on July 13, 2026, disrupted its logistics and shipment operations. The Tokyo-headquartered company, founded in 1942 and known for its frozen food business, operates globally through numerous subsidiaries.
Immediately following the incident, Nichirei established an emergency response team to investigate the cause and coordinate recovery efforts. To mitigate further risk and facilitate the ongoing investigation, the company has refrained from disclosing specific technical details about the attack.
The cyberattack led to system outages that impacted various businesses reliant on Nichirei's services, including restaurant chains, major retailers, and delivery services. To contain the attack, Nichirei disconnected its group systems on July 13, which in turn disrupted refrigerated warehouse operations and frozen food shipments.
Working with external cybersecurity experts, Nichirei began a phased restoration of affected operations on July 17. However, the company has not provided a definitive timeline for when its supply-delivery services and overall operations will return to full normalcy.
The investigation has revealed that some of the compromised servers contained personal information, raising concerns about a potential data breach. Nichirei has submitted an initial report to Japan's Personal Information Protection Commission regarding this possibility. The company stated it would promptly notify affected parties if any data leakage is confirmed.
Nichirei is currently assessing the financial implications of the cyberattack. The company plans to release its first-quarter 2026 financial results on August 7 as scheduled and will disclose any significant impacts at that time.
