Microsoft 365 services experienced a significant outage primarily affecting users in North America, beginning at 10:44 AM ET on July 23. The incident, identified as MO1437424, led to widespread degradation across multiple core services, prompting Microsoft to advise customers to review their business continuity and disaster recovery plans.
Downdetector recorded a sharp increase in reports, with 2,403 complaints at 11:11 AM ET, significantly above its typical baseline. SharePoint accounted for the majority of these reports at 78%, followed by Excel at 11%, and the Microsoft 365 Admin Center at 6%.
Confirmed impacts included intermittent access to OneDrive, with SharePoint Online users encountering a "Something went wrong" error. Microsoft Teams experienced degraded chat functionality, including issues with images loading. The Microsoft 365 Admin Center was reported to be loading slowly or not at all, while Power Automate flows failed to load. Copilot Chat also saw intermittent delays or failures in actions and queries, and Microsoft Loop pages were unable to open or load.
Microsoft confirmed it was investigating the issues and that multiple services were degraded. Initial attempts to reroute traffic for some affected infrastructure resulted in a partial recovery for some users, but many services remained impacted. The company acknowledged that its initial efforts were unsuccessful and did not provide an estimated time for resolution.
By 1:55 PM ET, Microsoft indicated it might have identified the likely cause of the issue and was actively deploying mitigation actions. The company expected to provide an update on the effectiveness of these actions by approximately 2:30 PM ET as it closely monitored service recovery.
