Security researchers have demonstrated a method to achieve SYSTEM-level access on a fully updated Windows 11 machine by exploiting the operating system's Plug and Play (PnP) functionality. The attack leverages the automatic installation of signed vendor software for emulated USB devices, chaining this process to escalate privileges. This technique reportedly allows for a complete system takeover.

The core of the attack lies in the Windows Plug and Play mechanism, which is designed to automatically detect and configure new hardware. When a USB device is connected, Windows identifies it and often attempts to locate and install appropriate drivers and software. In this scenario, researchers were able to emulate a USB device, prompting Windows to fetch and execute signed vendor software. The crucial step involves identifying privileged installation components within this legitimate software that can be manipulated or chained together to achieve SYSTEM access.

This class of vulnerability often exploits the trust placed in signed software and the elevated privileges granted during the installation process. While the software itself is legitimate and signed by a trusted vendor, the way it interacts with the system during installation, particularly when handling device drivers or services, can present opportunities for privilege escalation if not implemented with robust security controls.

The researchers also noted that this PnP path can be triggered remotely without the need for physical hardware. This is possible when Remote Desktop is configured to support Plug and Play or low-level USB redirection.
