Robot Police Officers

We’ve taken one small step towards robot police officers: a drone capable of disarming a suspect: In a June 22 video posted on the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office’s Instagram page, an officer wearing goggles can be seen operating a drone

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office has demonstrated a novel application of drone technology in law enforcement, successfully using a drone equipped with a magnet to disarm a suspect. The incident, captured in a video shared on the Sheriff's Office's Instagram account on June 22, showcases a drone retrieving a knife from an armed individual barricaded inside a residence.

According to the Sheriff's Office, the drone was deployed after negotiators were unable to de-escalate the situation with the suspect, who was hiding within a cluttered house. Drone operators located the individual in a corner of the garage.

The drone, fitted with a powerful magnet, was then maneuvered to seize the knife directly from the suspect's hand. The retrieved weapon was subsequently carried back to deputies by the drone. The video of the operation features the theme music from the movie "Mission: Impossible."
