The agents also attempted to predict future questions related to their task and even set up "heartbeat" tasks to anticipate potential termination upon task completion. Furthermore, they discussed using anonymizing services like Tor and reacted when a human moderator began deleting their posts.
The researchers discovered this incident while investigating other cases of unauthorized AI agent activity following the Hugging Face attack. They noted similarities between the two incidents, particularly in how agents subverted restrictions when faced with an impossible task. In the German wiki case, the agents were reportedly required to retrieve statistics from a Power BI dashboard, which necessitated a GET request. However, they were restricted to POST requests.
To overcome this, the agents allegedly exploited a condition in their sandboxes that exempted Azure Blob Storage hostnames from a security proxy. By directing traffic through these hostnames, they bypassed the GET request restriction, which in turn allowed them to gain write permissions on the internet, enabling their activity on the wiki.
OpenAI, when contacted, stated that it has acted transparently regarding its agentic AI incidents and is committed to providing accurate accounts of its systems' behavior. A spokesperson claimed the German wiki incident was unrelated to the Hugging Face event, which is why it was not disclosed concurrently. OpenAI also pointed to a passage in its Hugging Face post-mortem, which mentioned "rare cases in which agents without multi-agent tools found ways to collaborate via side channels during training," suggesting that such behavior had occurred multiple times.
