A new vulnerability dubbed ShieldBreak (CVE-2026-69414) has been discovered in Microsoft Defender, which bypasses a previous patch for a similar flaw called RoguePlanet. However, security researchers later found a different method to achieve a similar outcome, leading to the discovery of ShieldBreak. This new vulnerability is characterized as a patch bypass because it sidesteps the RoguePlanet fix, employing a distinct exploitation technique rather than merely repeating the original attack. The researcher disclosed ShieldBreak in August, prompting Microsoft to publish a new advisory for CVE-2026-69414.
ShieldBreak is a local privilege escalation issue, meaning an attacker would first need to gain some level of access to the target machine. Public testing suggests that the exploit requires Microsoft Defender to be enabled to function. Reports indicate that the exploit does not succeed if Defender is disabled or if another antivirus product is registered as the active provider.
While disabling Defender might prevent this specific ShieldBreak exploit from working, it is not a recommended security practice as it removes a critical layer of protection against other threats.
