Microsoft has commenced the rollout of the Windows 11 2026 Update, designated as version 26H2, to all users. This annual feature update is not expected to introduce a significant number of new features for most users, as many enhancements have already been delivered through monthly Windows Updates for those running recent versions.

The 26H2 update shares a common servicing branch with its predecessors, Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2. This means these versions are built on the same core codebase, receive identical security and quality updates, and undergo the same compatibility validation. The primary distinction between these versions lies in which features are enabled by default.

For users already on Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2, the update to 26H2 will function more like a standard monthly cumulative update rather than a comprehensive operating system replacement. Microsoft has confirmed that this is due to the shared servicing model, where the update is delivered as a small enablement package.

Microsoft states that the continuous delivery of features means many of the improvements associated with 26H2 may already be familiar to users who have kept their systems updated. However, for commercial PCs, the 26H2 update will enable certain features that were previously not active by default, including Windows settings backup, app-specific taskbar actions, and various File Explorer enhancements.

An important exception to the upgrade path is for devices originally shipped with Windows 11 26H1. These systems utilize a different Windows core and therefore cannot directly update to 26H2. Microsoft has confirmed that 26H1 devices will instead be directed to a future Windows release for their next update.

Installing the 26H2 update also resets the Windows support lifecycle. Home and Pro editions will receive 24 months of support, while Enterprise and Education editions will be supported for 36 months. For users on Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2, the primary benefit of updating to 26H2 is to transition to the latest supported version of Windows 11.
