For the highest level of control, "Strict Mode" restricts incoming connections to only core services like web browsing and email. While this offers enhanced security, it may block functionalities such as AirDrop or screen sharing.
Two other settings streamline the approval process for trusted applications. "Trust Apple apps" automatically allows connections for built-in macOS applications, including FaceTime, Messages, and Notes, eliminating the need for individual approvals. Similarly, "Trust verified downloaded apps" grants automatic permission for incoming connections from applications that users have downloaded and explicitly chosen to trust, such as Zoom, Dropbox, or Outlook, bypassing manual authorization for each.
Users can dynamically switch between these settings based on their network environment. For instance, when on a home Wi-Fi network, enabling "Trust Apple apps" and "Trust verified downloaded apps" might be suitable. When using public Wi-Fi, activating "Stealth Mode" is recommended for added privacy, and "Strict Mode" can be engaged for even tighter control over incoming connections.
